The Barbados Bridge League is now the proud owner of a DUPLIMATE Mk 4.3 machine which it intends to use for the automatic duplication of computer produced hands. As a necessary adjunct to this are two pieces of software which generate the hands:- WinDup, which will produce random distributions and generate statistics to drmonstrate how close the output matches the expected frequencies of the various possible distributions, and Dealmaster Pro, which has the added facility of permitting user specification of the type of distribution desired. This latter feature is expected to be very valuable as a teaching support for the classes organised by the league.
It is further intended that the publication of the results of the various games on the League's web page will now be accompanied by a copy of the relevant hand records, and it is hoped that this will allow for a commentary on the interesting hands as shown by the results obtained at the tables. All persons interested in contribution to this commentary - a sharing of the work load is desirable - should contact the President. |

The introduction of the dealing machine and the use of computer generated deals has prompted questions about the "randomness"" of the deals. The information given below is produced as a compilation of the statistics of all the deals generated by WinDup so far.

World Bridge Champonships |
|
It is the dream of every bridge player to compete for his country at the WBF Championships. For 12 Barbadians that dream came true during the period August 28 - September 12 in Sao Paulo, Brasil. During the first week six ladies competed for the Venice Cup, and 6 Seniors played for the DÖrsi Seniors Bowl. Both teams were playing in fields that included professionals as well as current and former world champions. The seniors won 7 of their 21 matches against, among others, Italy, Poland (eventual second place winners), Pakistan and Brasil. The ladies won 3 matches of their 21.
In the second week the teams played in a World Transnational Open Teams Competition and the ladies made a great start but faded as the swiss movement pitted them against other early winners.. This competition was of a very high level as it contained a number of very strong teams which had been eliminated from the three main competitions at the end of the round robin
The pair of Watkins and Blackman recorded positive Butlers scores at the end of the round robins of both the DÖrsi Bowl and the WTOT. Cummins and Thompson had similarly positive results for the WTOT. Both can be proud of that Butler comparison with the current crop of the world's best.
